LEE YI SHYAN LEADS BUSINESS DELEGATION TO EXPLORE ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES IN RUSSIA

16 – 21 OCTOBER 2006

Minister of State for Trade and Industry Mr Lee Yi Shyan will visit Russia from 16 to 21 October. His visit will cover Moscow and Russia’s Special Economic Zones in Tomsk and Tatarstan (Elabuga). Singapore plays an advisory role for these two zones under the MOU on Cooperation in SEZs signed between Russia and Singapore on 14 August 2006.

This trip aims to explore other areas for bilateral economic cooperation, as well as uncover new business opportunities for Singapore companies in a fast growing Russia.

During the trip, MOS Lee will call on the Minister of Economic Development and Trade German Gref, Minister of Education and Science Andrey Fursenko, Mayor of Moscow Yury Luzkhov, and other political and business leaders.

Singapore’s bilateral trade with Russia has risen steadily since 2000. In 2005, Russia ranked as Singapore’s 38th largest trading partner with bilateral trade totaling S$1.32 billion. An emerging Russia presents opportunities in consumer durables, food and beverage sectors, technology, and the burgeoning real estate industry. A number of Singapore companies have already successfully tapped into these areas and are keen to expand further.

MOS Lee will be accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Enterprise Singapore, Agency for Science, Technology and Research, Jurong Town Corporation and the Economic Development Board. He will also be joined by representatives from Singapore companies in the real estate, infrastructure and technology sectors.
