Written reply to PQ on Timeline for Deployment of Small Modular Nuclear Reactors

Question

Mr Louis Chua Kheng Wee: To ask the Minister for Trade and Industry whether the Government has a timeline for deciding whether to deploy the use of small modular nuclear reactors in Singapore’s energy mix.

Written Answer by Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong

1. The Energy Market Authority (EMA) closely monitors developments on alternative sources of energy, including nuclear energy. EMA is aware that some countries are now developing advanced reactor designs such as small modular reactors. However, most of these designs are still undergoing research and development and have not begun commercial operations.

2. The government has not made any decision regarding the deployment of nuclear energy in Singapore. Such a decision will require detailed studies of the safety, reliability, affordability, and environmental sustainability of nuclear energy in our local context.
