Written reply to PQ on Re-processing of Nuclear Fuel

Question

Assoc Prof Jamus Jerome Lim: To ask the Minister for Trade and Industry (a) whether there has been any consideration on re-processing spent nuclear fuel; and (b) whether there is currently any consideration of a threshold purity target for such re-processing.

Written Answer by Second Minister for Trade and Industry Tan See Leng

1. The Government is monitoring developments related to nuclear technologies, including the re-processing of spent nuclear fuel. However, given the rapidly evolving nature of nuclear energy technologies, and their technical complexity, it is premature to decide whether Singapore should pursue spent nuclear fuel re-processing and the threshold purity target for doing so. Moreover we have yet to form a definitive conclusion on the suitability of deploying nuclear energy in Singapore. Further study and assessment would be required. We will continue to work with academia and industry experts to better understand the various fuel cycle and nuclear waste storage and disposal options, before coming to any decision.
