Written reply to PQ on Electricity demand from grid versus on-site generation and proportion of green energy commitment from local renewable generation versus imported sources for DC-CFA2

Question:

Mr Chua Kheng Wee Louis: To ask the Minister for Trade and Industry (Energy and Industry) regarding data centres awarded under the second Data Centre Call for Application (DC-CFA2) exercise (a) what is the amount of electricity demand to be drawn from the grid versus on-site generation when commissioned, and their share of the total data centre demand; (b) what proportion of their green energy commitment will come from Singapore-based renewable generation, versus imported electricity or market-based instruments; and (c) how will this be verified.

1.        The data centres which have been provisionally awarded capacity under the second Data Centre Call for Application (DC-CFA2) exercise will have a combined capacity of 200 megawatts (MW). This will represent around 12 per cent of Singapore’s total data centre capacity. The electricity demand of the data centres will be primarily drawn from the national grid, supplemented by on-site solar.  

2.        More than half of this capacity will be powered by Singapore-based low-carbon power generation from building-integrated/building-applied photovoltaics (BIPV/BAPV), and fuels such as biomethane, ammonia and hydrogen.  

3.        These data centres will be required, as a condition of their capacity support, to report their overall electricity consumption and substantiate the proportion of this electricity consumption that is generated from low-carbon sources to the Infocomm Media Development Authority and the Economic Development Board.
