Written PQ on private residential solar energy grid exports and assessing contributions to Singapore’s renewable energy targets
7 July 2026
Question:
Mr Christopher de Souza: To ask the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry (a) how many private residential properties currently export electricity generated from self-installed solar panels back to the grid; and (b) what assessment has been made of the contribution of such residential solar generation towards Singapore's renewable energy targets and broader sustainability goals.
Written Answer by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong
1. As of end-2025, around 6,900 private residential buildings have registered their solar installations with SP Group for the export of excess solar-generated electricity to the grid.
2. The installed solar capacity of these residential buildings is 115.3 megawatt-peak (MWp), or around 5.5% of all current installed solar capacity in Singapore. While there is scope to grow private residential solar generation, it will only make up less than 1% of Singapore's long-term generation mix due to land constraints and heavy cloud cover. Therefore, to achieve our broader sustainability goals, we need to depend on other more impactful measures to conserve energy, diversify our energy mix, and decarbonise our economy. Some examples of how Singaporeans can help are by switching to more energy efficient home appliances, taking public transport instead of driving, and switching to electric vehicles.
