Speech by Minister of State for Trade and Industry Gan Siow Huang at the Mums@Work’s women beyond borders: Tokyo business study mission send-off and launch ceremony
14 April 2026
Ms Sher-Li Torrey, Founder of Mums@Work Asia,
Distinguished guests,
Introduction
1. Thank you, Sher-Li for inviting me. I have known Sher-Li since my days at the Ministry of Manpower and Ministry of Education. Sher-Li is a strong advocate of many things – supporting parents, supporting women, supporting mothers coming back to work. Today’s event by Mums@Work Asia, supporting women going beyond borders, is something that is worthwhile pursuing.
2. Singapore is full of talent, opportunities, and resources, but we have a small market. We have many good ideas, people who are able to achieve much, businesses that have the potential to grow by being connected to overseas markets, whether it is in Southeast Asia or others. I note that there are plans for a trip to Japan, where there will be many opportunities.
Strong Singapore-Japan economic partnership
3. Singapore and Japan have a good and strong relationship. Japan consistently ranks among Singapore’s top 10 partners in trade and investment. As of 2025, there are more than 5,300 Japanese companies operating in Singapore. They contribute significantly to our economy and create good jobs for Singaporeans.
4. It will be beneficial for Singaporean entrepreneurs to go to Japan to explore new markets. Sometimes, it can be daunting to go to a new place, understand a new culture, business climate, the do’s and don’ts, and new networks. So what Mums@Work Asia is doing is especially important, opening the doors to overseas markets. I thank partner organisations, including UOB for providing consulting and financing opportunities for businesses.
Supporting a vibrant enterprise ecosystem
5. The number of women entrepreneurs in Singapore has been growing, and this is encouraging. Yet, the revenue and growth captured by companies founded by women are not as much as others. There is definitely something we can do by forming partnerships, learning from others, and looking towards growth opportunities beyond Singapore.
6. I would like to wish you all the best, for those who are making the trip to Japan later this year. May you have a fruitful trip.
7. At this year’s Budget, DPM Gan shared how the Government will continue to support our enterprises on this journey. Through initiatives such as StartupSG, we support promising founders through grants, co-investments, mentorship, and talent development.
8. For companies looking to expand abroad, the Global Innovation Alliance connects Singapore enterprises with overseas innovation ecosystems, markets, and partners to help them build collaborations and explore new opportunities.
Conclusion
9. I am very excited that our women entrepreneurs are making an impact in Singapore and Asia.
10. I wish all participants the best.
11. Thank you.
