Question

Dennis Tan Lip Fong: To ask the Minister for Trade and Industry (a) how many shipyards in Singapore are actively performing building, conversion or repair works for vessels; and (b) how does the Government regulate sound sustainability practices in shipbuilding, design, and retrofitting to ensure these are consistently carried out in our shipyards.

Written Answer by Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong

1. We do not specifically track the number of shipyards in Singapore that are actively performing building, conversion or repair works on vessels. However, there are currently 70 shipyards registered with MPA where vessels calling at them enjoy port dues concession.

2. The Singapore Government is working closely with the industry to equip the sector with the skills and capacity to decarbonise and seize opportunities in the green economy, such as in offshore renewable energy and the electrification of vessels. Together with the Association of Singapore Marine Industries (ASMI), we have developed several sustainability initiatives, including courses to encourage shipyard operators to reduce their emissions.

3. A*STAR has also dedicated funds for Research & Development efforts in key areas of opportunity such as offshore renewable energy, marine electrification, cleaner fuels supply chain and smart ocean systems.

4. To upskill the marine workforce, Workforce Singapore (WSG) offers Career Conversion Programmes (CCP) for Marine and Sustainability Professionals to build their capabilities in sustainable practices.
